Oh, would it not be absurd if there was no objective state?
What if the unobserved always waits, insubstantial,
till our eyes give it shape?

Monthly meetings of the NJAG are free and open to the public - all are welcomed. Meetings usually feature a presentation about astronomy or space science by an amateur or professional astronomer. Click "Read More" below for details!

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month (except August); light refreshments will be served. Meeting will be held at Montclair State University in the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences (CELS). This is the new large white building next to Richardson Hall and Science Hall. NJAG will usuall meet in room 110 on the first floor (this is the room off on the left hand side at the back of the main lobby area). Note occasionally when room 110 is not available, we meet in room 207 on the second floor at the top of the stairs. For directions, click on 'Directions' at top of the page.

The Southern Sky

Southern Sky

The November NJAG astronomy club meeting will feature our own Terry Baz on “The Southern Sky.” Terry joined NJAG two years ago after he moved to New Jersey from upstate New York. He grew up in Sydney, Australia and loves the constellations which can be seen from the southern hemisphere.

The presentation and meeting will be held in the CELS science building, in room 110 at the rear left hand side of lobby area at Montclair State University starting at 8 PM.

SOFIA Mission at October Meeting

SOFIAOur guest speaker for the October 11th meeting will be Missy Holtzer. Her presentation will be "Exploring Our Invisible Universe With SOFIA." The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a flying infrared observatory built and operated by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

The presentation and meeting will be held in the CELS science building, in room 110 at the rear left hand side of lobby area at Montclair State University starting at 8 PM.

Eclipse Stories

EclipseMembers of the NJAG spread out along the track of the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse from Oregon to South Carolina. At the September 13 monthly meeting members will share their eclipse experiences and photos from here in New Jersey to the path of totality.

The presentation and meeting will be held in the CELS science building, in room 110 at the rear left hand side of lobby area at Montclair State University starting at 8 PM.

Astronomy at the Bottom of the World

South Pole Telescope

Astronomy at the Bottom of the World

Our guest speaker for the July NJAG meeting will be Jim Nordhausen from Amateur Astronomers Inc.

The dry dark cold expanse of Antarctica offers a super platform for astronomical observations and meteorite finds. Learn about the most cutting edge astronomical research that you never heard about!

Wednesday, July 12, 2017, 8:00 PM
CELS Building 207, Montclair State University

Chasing Total Solar Eclipses

Our guest speaker for the June NJAG meeting will be amateur astronomer John Lowe who will share with us his experiences observing solar eclipses around the world.

Solar Eclipse

Chasing Total Solar Eclipses: My Journeys into the Lunar Shadow

The first total solar eclipse in the continental United States in 38 years is only a couple of months away. We will explore all the interesting phenomena that occur during the amazing and rare event. I will use footage and photos from eclipses across the globe including Kenya, India, China, Turkey, Venezuela, and New Zealand...on land and by ship.

May Meeting

wormhole

Volcanoes, Wormholes and Supernova, Oh My!
MSU Student Astronomy and Geoscience Projects

The May meeting of the North Jersey Astronomical Group will feature students from Montclair State University who will make presentations on projects they ahve been working in this spring. The topics and speakers include:

  • Gravitational wave “sounds” from supernova explosions and spinning neutron stars  – Lita de la Cruz and Kevin Chen
  • Orbits in a wormhole spacetime  – Manuel Albrizzio
  • Seismic Imaging of Kilauea Volcano– Korie Vee

Note these presentations are free and open to the public; meeting will take place in the CELS Building in room 110 at 8 p.m.

Jumping Jupiter at April NJAG Meeting

Juno at Jupiter

Jumping Jupiter: Juno's Mission to the Giant Planet

Our guest speaker for the April meeting of the NJAG will be Kevin Conod, Manager of the Newark Museum's Dreyfuss Planetarium.

NASA's Juno spacecraft reached Jupiter last summer after a five year journey. The spacecraft is now in an elliptical orbit designed to probe the unexplored polar regions as well as the interior of the giant planet.

During this presentation, we will review what we currently know about Jupiter and take a look at what scientists hope to learn from Juno's mission. The presentation will feature spectacular images from Juno's recently completed close passes of the planet.

Note this presentation and meeting will take place in the CELS Building in room 110.

March Meeting: Radio Astronomy & the Eclipse

solar eclipse

Our guest speaker for the March 8 meeting will be Dr. Nathaniel Frissell. Dr. Frissell is a Post Doctoral Research Associate at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

He will speak on how radio astronomy and "citizen science"  will be used to study the effect of eclipses on the Earth's ionosphere and upper atmosphere during the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse.

Note this meeting will take place in CELS room 207.

February Meeting: Preparing for Apollo

ApolloOn February 8th, the North Jersey Astronomical Group will  have a presentation "Preparing for Apollo" about meteorites and the Apollo program. Our guest speaker will be Al Witzgall of Amateur Astronomers Inc. Mr. Witzgall will share with us the tale of two meteorites and how they were used for training the astronauts who went to the Moon during the Apollo program.

Note: this meeting will be held at 8 pm in room 207 on the second floor of the CELS building at the top of the stairs.
