"Professor Goddard does not know the relation between action and reaction and the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react. He seems to lack the basic knowledge ladled out daily in high schools."
--1921 New York Times editorial about Robert Goddard's revolutionary rocket work.

"Correction: It is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum. The 'Times' regrets the error."
NY Times, July 1969.

Total Solar Eclipse

Event Date:
Mon, 04/08/2024 - 2:10pm - 4:36pm

There will be a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The event will be visible here in New Jersey, but it will be a partial eclipse here. The path of totality does not pass through the Garden State.

eclipseHere are the timings for the start, maximum and end of the partial eclipse:
Start: 2:09 PM
Max: 3:25 PM
Ends: 4:36 PM

The Moon will cover about 90% of the Sun here at maximum eclipse. But note this is not totality, so you will need a solar filter or eclipse glasses to protect your eyes while viewing during the entire time.

For more information about the eclipse, sources of filters, etc. See: https://eclipse.aas.org/

PLEASE NOTE: since totality does not pass through New Jersey, NJAG is not planning an event for this eclipse. Most of the members of our club are leaving the state heading north, west or south to go view totality. That means will will not have enough volunteers to run a local event here.
