NJAG Online!

The North Jersey Astronomical Group will be having its first virtual presentation on Wednesday May 13 at 8 pm.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Juliane Gross and her presentation will be "The Search and Recovery of Meteorites in Antarctica." Dr. Gross is an associate professor at Rutgers University and currently the Deputy Curator for Apollo samples at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

In this presentation she will talk about her research on lunar meteorites and her experience in Antarctica to recover meteorite. Antarctica is a cold desert that will keep meteorites frozen in their pristine form. In 2017-2018, Dr. Gross was on the team of only 8 people that once a year get send by NASA, in conjunction with Case Western University, on a mission to the icy continent. For 2-3 months they braved the cold and hardship to recover those meteorites, living in tiny tents with not a single living organism around. This presentation will be about the journey to the icy continent, the beauty and the beasts of Antarctica, the daily struggles of life on the ice plateau, and the hardships and wondrous joys of finding meteorites, interspersed with her work as the deputy curator of the Apollo samples at NASA JSC.

This presentation is free and will be online using Webex Meetings.
