Welcome to the North Jersey Astronomical Group's web page. The NJAG is an astronomy club of almost 100 stargazers interested in all aspects of the night sky.

Since 1981, the NJAG has sponsored many activities for the public in Northern New Jersey, including weekly Telescope Nights and a monthly lecture series in the spring and fall plus special events. Tens of thousands of people have discovered the wonders of the Universe through our telescopes!

For information on joining our club - please click on "Join NJAG" on the menu above.

The NJAG is a member of the
United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey
(UACNJ)

...and the International Dark Sky Association (IDA).

ECLIPSE - There will be a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The event will be visible here in New Jersey, but it will be a partial eclipse here. The path of totality does not pass through the Garden State.

PLEASE NOTE: since totality does not occur here, NJAG is not organizing an event for this eclipse. Most of the members of our club are leaving the state heading north, west or south to go view totality. That means will will not have enough volunteers to run a local event here.

eclipseHere are the timings for the start, maximum and end of the partial eclipse so that you can view the event on your own:

  • Start: 2:09 PM
  • Max: 3:25 PM
  • Ends: 4:36 PM

The Moon will cover about 91% of the Sun here at maximum eclipse. For more information about the eclipse, see: https://eclipse.aas.org/. Note this is not totality, so you will need a solar filter or eclipse glasses to protect your eyes while viewing during the entire time

Please also note: we do not have solar filter glasses! If you need them, visit the American Astronomical Society's list of safe suppliers: https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters. We have also spotted solar filter glasses being sold at local Walmarts.

MEETINGS - Our monthly meetings will be on the second Tuesday of the month and are held at Montclair State. Many of the previous meetings are posted on our YouTube Channel. See our event calendar for upcoming meetings and stargazing events.

STARGAZING - Our monthly stargazing events have resumed. Check the event calendar for upcoming dates.
